Hello everyone, it’s Pierre, the Fish Beast and welcome to my channel!
I love tropical fishkeeping and started this channel to document and share my tanks as well as some tips and tricks I’ve picked up along the way.
I have a degree in Biology and am also a Doctor of Medicine, so I use lots of science and research in my videos. I’m not perfect so if you think I’m mistaken or misinformed, please say so - I love to learn.
Finally, I love comments and especially do my best to answer questions, so ask away!
Hopefully you find something to enjoy on my channel. Thanks for stopping by and happy fishkeeping!

90% Water Change on 20 Gallon Fish Tank! Oscar Aquarium Maintenance
Hello everyone, it's Pierre and welcome back!
This video is about cleaning and changing the water in my 20 gallon fish tank. This is a "growout" aquarium for 3 baby oscars and 2 severums. They measure about 2-3 inches each. I feed them a lot and keep the nitrates as low as possible so they grow quickly.
One way to do this is with big, huge, massive water changes. This video shows me changing 90% of the water. Despite what many people think, big water changes do not harm fish. In nature a big flood or rainstorm changes the water chemistry and temperature very quickly... imagine if fish couldn't adapt to this?
The tank is a standard 20 gallon aquarium. The oscars and severums are approximately 3 month old babies. I use a simple, big and ugly sponge filter. There is a pothos plant with its roots in the water as well as some duckweed. It has a heater but it really turns on very rarely since I keep the room itself at around 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
I don't really care much about how the tank looks since it's not on "display" - it's just top grow out these fish until I can put them in an empty 150 gallon aquarium that I'll be setting up soon. I do care about the nitrates which accumulate fairly quickly despite the plants since I feed heavily.
I test the water weekly. Once the nitrates exceed 40 ppm, I perform a 90% water change. I use a DIY PVC pipe siphon with a squeeze bulb to drain the water down to the "fin level".
In case you were wondering how the fish do with this... well, check out the video!
Thanks for watching and happy fishkeeping! See you next time.

Horrible video. Does not offer any real reason as to why they don’t work outside of conjecture. And reading from a script does not instill any sense of confidence in this opinion.
Thank you for your input! It isn't conjecture nor is it an opinion. It is based on informed research conducted by an individual who is a biologist and medical doctor who has a good understanding of organic chemistry and vertebrate physiology. That individual is me. There are ZERO compounds in these oils that cure disease. Sorry to disappoint you! If you wish to prove science wrong then please present the manuscript of your clinical trial. Have a great day and happy fishkeeping!
How do you induce spawning? I’ve kept 3 but none of them have ever berried
@@ApexPrimals not sure… each individual seems to produce eggs at different intervals. Some of mine do not appear to have ever berried either
This is very helpful to us nee fish keepers who want to start off with 29 gallon. Since we’re not spending upwards of $500 in just shipping for a sturdy one we can actually spend on better rhings like filters, live plants, heaters, and proper lighting systems which would have otherwise been out of reach
@@ffxfgxsfxxxg2419 thank you! Yes that was my intention. I will make one of these in a smaller size from start to finish. Happy fishkeeping my friend! 😊

This video contains soooo much false information. Don’t listen to this guy! If you have an air stone or a sponge filter, then no oxygen will be taken out of the water as this is manifestly an all NATURAL product and is sold in Canada where all fish medication has been banned since 2020. Again, ignore this false news and misleading video!
Hello! UA-cam blocked your comment automatically but I allowed it to be posted and even pinned it so that people may see and be educated. I request that you back up your assertion with evidence. Specifically, please tell us how this product works against disease. Show me a clinical trial where either product is demonstrated to be superior to placebo. Your sentence is a little difficult to understand… you go from talking about oxygen and air stones to how these are “natural” to the banning of medications for fish in Canada. It’s too bad that Canada bans fish medication… that doesn’t change the fact that these 2 products are absolutely useless in treating disease. Caveat emptor. Happy fishkeeping! Also if your fish are sick, I may be able to help.
It’s difficult to change more than 20 % of the water at once , water temperature and water chemistry will be different
Hello! Thanks for your comment! Unfortunately, that is incorrect. In nature, fish swim in and out of areas with different chemistry/salinity, temperature (thermoclines) and even oxygen content all the time. When there is a flood or rainstorm, the TDS can drop really quickly as a ton of essentially RO water is dumped into a water body. Rapid evaporation can also increase the TDS of a pool or pond. Fish have evolved the ability to adapt to their environment extremely well! There is no scientific evidence that doing large water changes (as long as the water is dechlorinated) is anything but good for fish. The only exception is “old tank syndrome” where top offs result from neglect and TDS creep occurs from gradual nitrate accumulation. A large water change can theoretically cause a massive pH swing in that case. Thank you for your excellent comment and I hope I helped shed some light on this issue. Happy fishkeeping! 😊

This wasn't helpful at all.. what should you use? And your answer was don't get them sick.. it would be better if you broadly touched on recommended products for common diseases.
Sorry but the whole point of the video was just to talk about how ineffective these 2 products are. It’s too hard to recommend treatments without guiding people on diagnosis… are your fish sick? Maybe I can help.

What’s the best medication for dropsy?
Dropsy is a symptom and not a disease in and of itself. There are hundreds of possible causes. How long has the fish been sick? What other symptoms are there? What size is the tank and was it cycled before you added fish? I guess a decent thing to try would be kanamycin. Unfortunately, when dropsy manifests, it’s usually fatal since it’s the end stage of another illness.
Nice video! I have a few questions if you don’t mind answering: 1: What size tank is your Moonlight in? 2: is your Moonlight ok with no other Moonlight gouramis? 3: is your Moonlight interactive with you? Thank you!
Hello! Thank you for your comment! The moonlight is in a 75 gallon tank that is part of a 150 gallon total volume system. Seems ok with no other moonlight gouramis. And it is very interactive, comes close when I approach the tank and eats out of my hand!
@@TheFishBeast thank you for the response! I want to get a Moonlight but unfortunately my 25 gallon is just too small. Would not be responsible lol
@@Sandrock14 Good on you for doing your research! You can get 3 powder blue dwarf gouramis for a 25 gallon and maybe 6 ember tetras. That would look amazing especially if it's planted!

I pulled up this video because I had a pacu that grew from 1" to the size shown here. To this day I feel awful about not being able to take care of him. He just grew too big no matter how many times I increased the tank size. He was the sweetest fish and he really belonged in a river or lake but no one would take him as a rescue fish 😢. I wish they would stop selling this breed in pet stores
100% agree. What happened to him? It’ll take legislation to change which fish are sold in stores, unfortunately. Maybe someone should start lobbying!
Unfortunately he died. It was about 5 years ago and I still think of him. I would sign anything to keep these guys out of pet stores. There should be a max adult size on all breeds
@Su6aw0lf oh no 😥
hello, I have a fairly large table-type aquarium, and last night I forgot to turn on the cleaning pump after feeding them. In the morning, in addition to the fact that the water was very cloudy, the fish seemed to have no air and that by tonight some would even die. I cleaned the sponges of the pump but at the moment no change. any advice?
Sorry to hear that! When you say cleaning pump, do you mean the filter? Is the filter inside the aquarium or in a sump? Also how many gallons is the tank, what fish are in it and how long has it been running?
I’ve tried Pimafix yesterday not sure if it’s working but I’m trying everything, haven’t opened the bottle of Melafix or Super Ick Cure yet because the little white spots spotted on Oranda wen seem to just be wen growth. My Oranda hides often and sits at bottom of tank with slow breathing but have spurts where he swims around for a while acting normal. My Nitrates are 0.5 which I know is supposed to be 0 but idk if that is what is causing the issues since I have a fancy goldfish and a comet aswell in a 75 gallon tank. If you know anything please help! I can give more details
Do you mean nitrites are 0.5? If that’s the case the tank may not be cycled. How long has it been up? Give me as many details as possible so I can help you.
@@TheFishBeast yes nitrites are 0.5 my bad, the tank has been up and going for 2 months or so everything is good except for nitrites, carbonate hardness is at 40 and general hardness is at 60 which needs to go up but I’m unsure on how. Seems there is algae growing on decorations not sure if that’s good or bad, I have 3 live plants in tank with total of 3 fish the fancy goldfish and comet seem fine besides maybe some crazy spurs where they go 100mph. Water temp is around 75, have the 3 layer fluval filtration system with the biomax, carbon pouch and sponge rated for up to 110 gallons. The Oranda seems perfectly fine at some points other times decides to hide on left side of tank just beyond the filter at bottom in between a plant and some driftwood. Not sure if it could be possible nitrite poisoning but the other fish seem fine so I’m just lost
@@SavvyKBM goldfish are super tough and can handle nitrites. Do the other fish have any signs of disease or any lesions? Can you upload some pics of the Oranda to Imgur and link here? I’ll analyze and let you know what I think. Also try posting in some goldfish forum as well. If it’s just on the wen then it could just be wen growth which is generally not an issue unless it gets red/inflamed. What’s throwing me off is the behavior…
